Stan Chudnovsky, FB Messenger’s Head of Product, discussed FB Messenger’s new feature, Watch Together, which lets users watch content together while on video chat. Several streaming services have launched various co-viewing experiences over the past few months as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Facebook’s had actually been announced a couple of years ago.
Chudnovsky was asked how user trends have changed for the app over the last few months and he explained that usage of video calls and messages has increased considerably given the current situation. He also mentioned that remote communication has taken us one step further than “in real life” communication, as we can now get feedback on our communication experiences that help improve it.
Lastly, Chudnovsky discussed the possible benefits of remote work. He highlighted how people can set up their workspace in a more convenient way and use their commute time more productively. Once the pandemic passes, he expects a hybrid work mode will be set in place (just like Atlassian’s Mike Cannon-Brookes). That said, this is the work mode he believes will be more challenging to implement.

The 200 selected startups are divided across eight categories:

От блога к экосистеме TechCrunch Network

The TechCrunch team combed through thousands of applicants to select a final class of 200, exemplary startups to feature on this year’s show floor at TechCrunch Disrupt. From those, 20 will be selected to compete for TechCrunch’s $100K equity-free prize. These startups join an illustrious alumni network of 900+ companies from around the globe with $9B collectively raised since appearing on the TechCrunch stage. Each startup exhibits on all 3 days of the show in the expo hall, and the 20 finalists will pitch on the Disrupt Stage throughout several rounds during the show. This year’s Startup Battlefield 200 is presented by Capital Connect by J.P. Morgan.
Innovative Solutions
I spoke with Joey Hinson, General Manager of TechCrunch, about this year’s event. He explained that in previous years they would select about 20 participants for the Startup Battlefield competition, and allow other companies to register for a price to exhibit at the event. This year, they changed things up.
Hinson highlighted that they took the “pay to play” aspect out of the equation by hand-picking the 200 participating startups. “We use editorial resources to select based on editorial criteria, and I think that that makes a ton of difference, right? Somebody who’s covering companies is going to come to it with an “Is this news?” mindset,” said Hinson. “Is this different? Like, why are these special?”
He told me the focus was on both the founders and the team, as well as the product or solution. Ultimately, it was about finding companies that are thinking about problems in a unique way. But he also stressed that companies need to be able to clearly communicate what they do and why it matters.

Align yourself with people who have done it right
The Disrupt Stage auditorium was packed from the first sessions on day two thanks to appearances from Kevin Hart and Serena Williams. Kevin Hart, who is best known as an outstanding comedian and actor, is co-founder of Hartbeat Ventures, an early-stage VC company focusing on lifestyle, media and technology projects. On stage with Hartbeat Ventures other co-founder Robert Roman and J.P. Morgan’s Michael Elanjian, Kevin announced taking on their first institutional investment from one of J.P. Morgan’s investment arms. The funds made available through the latest investment will be used to support minority and underrepresented founders.
While most in the audience were probably expecting more jokes, Kevin’s one piece of advice to entrepreneurs was to align yourself with people who have done it right in the past. He also spoke of his lack of understanding of the investment world and how his perception of investing in the past was that of “con men trying to steal your money” but has now learned how to make money work for him and his brand.
Following Kevin’s appearance was the appearance of another global superstar, Serena Williams. During her time on stage with her founding partner, Alison Rapaport Stillman, Serena spoke of the importance of diversity in their pre-seed, seed and series A investments including a focus on women and people of colour. She spoke about the importance of believing in the founders vision and her ability to read people has been key to the success of Serena Ventures to this date.

Building a Low Code Unicorn
San Francisco-based company Airtable hit unicorn status in 2018 by reaching a $1 billion value in 2018. Since then, the company has just kept growing. Co-founder and CEO, Howie Lue, discussed how the company aims at democratizing software creation and their journey from the spreadsheet business to an application platform that creates software builders.
Lue discussed how Airtable raised $185 million in Series D funding and announced the launch of new low-code and automation features. Regarding funding, he remarked this was the first time the company had turned to remote funding and added that they chose to work mostly with existing investors.
