How I Chose My Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT
So you look at an NFT collection and decide you want in. There’s no right answers on what specific item to buy. It’s a mixture of gut feeling, preference and then some basic tools and stats.
Personal Preference
Buy what you like the look of and odds are others will too. Easy enough.
If you want to try to quantify other’s preferences you can look at the view count and likes of an individual piece on OpenSea to try and gauge how it’s vibing within the community.
Statistical Traits
Since everything is transparently minted on the blockchain and images are stored on IPFS it’s easy to tell how rare a certain trait in the collection is.
Open sea will list the # of items in the collection with that trait and also give you a % on how often it appears.
Rarity Tools
There are even tools popping up that go deeper than the basic Open Sea metrics. My favorite is rarity.tools. It shows you the price floor for each trait and tries to quantify a “rarity” score for each item in the collection.
Bored Ape Auctions
I tried to buy a cool rare ape via an auction pricing (rather than buy it now) method. It was exciting sorting the collection by auctions ending soon and trying to swoop in at the last minute. This can be a great strategy, but I found that each time a bid is placed the auction extends it’s timer. In the end, I put in 3 bids, but each time I was out bid and didn’t end up getting the ape I desired.
After the adrenaline of the auction, I needed an ape.
Combining Feel and Analytics to Invest in NFTs
When buying my ape I went onto rarity.tools. Filtered for “buy now” and sorted from low to high.
I then looked for anomylys (rare rankings in the low price ranges). From there I picked an ape that I liked.
Currently, my ape #270 is ranked 4981 in rarity out of 10000. So it’s in the upper half of rarity. That was on the rare end for what I could afford, but I didn’t go off numbers alone. There were probably 10 or so more rare apes around that price range. But I didn’t like their look. I also wanted an ape with the BAYC hat. That is a rare trait and I think it’s winding up to be the signature piece of the apes, so I prioritized apes with that trait. Only 2% of apes have that hat and right now the price floor for that particular trait is at 5.29 ETH. (I bought my ape for 4.54 ETH)
Am I right in my purchase decision? Not sure. But I like the look of my ape and glad I have my passport to the bored ape community.
SO, WHAT’S THE VERDICT?
Obviously, there’s plenty of evidence stacked up against Bored Ape Yacht Club, as proven by a short scroll through Ryder Ripps’ Twitter feed, or the numerous arguments between Ape enthusiasts and aspiring cryptographers over the course of the last week. However, it goes without saying that allegations of Nazi ties should be taken seriously, and perhaps Twitter isn’t the place to do that (especially when there’s still no concrete proof).
Admittedly, there’s some sketchy imagery that’s worth keeping an eye on, but the rise of artists like Beeple has already proven that the NFT market is littered with bad taste, and it seems like there’s a pretty good chance that this is just more of the same.
He’s so sure, in fact, that he has apparently contacted the FBI about Bored Ape Yacht Club’s Nazi ties, and claims that the law enforcement agency “feel it’s compelling enough to investigate”.
Who Bought Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs?
To be sure, The Bored Ape Yacht Club’s immense popularity with major celebrities and brands has been the biggest factor in its immense cultural impact.
Indeed, BAYC’s list of celebrity members is too long to recount in its entirety. Just for an idea though, famous faces in the Yacht Club include: Snoop Dogg, Madonna, Eminem, Justin Bieber, Steve Aoki, Post Malone, Paris Hilton, Jimmy Fallon, Gary Vaynerchuk, Steph Curry, and Josh Hart.
Some big brands have also gotten in on the action like MeUndies and Adidas among others. There’s also the case of Christie’s and Sotheby’s – two famous auction houses which have hosted a number of NFT sales, including some Bored Apes.
Moreover, Gunna also owns an expensive BAYC PFP. Gunna proudly shared on Instagram that he acquired an NFT from @boredapeyachtclub valued at 300K. He named the NFT “BUTTA” and expressed gratitude to the project as well.

What Is So Special About Bored Ape Yacht Club Most Expensive?
The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) is an early implementation of the upcoming ERC-721 standard for non-fungible tokens. Because of this, it is a very rare and desirable NFT for collectors. Furthermore, BAYC is among the first NFTs to be developed by a big corporation. This makes it more respectable than other NFTs because of its credibility.
The fact that there is a physical asset behind the bored ape yacht club most expensive makes it unique. Each BAYC NFT is equivalent to a minority ownership stake in real-world yachts. This sets it apart from other NFTs, which are often entirely digital and have no tangible value.
Last but not least, BAYC is a very selective NFT. Only one hundred BAYC NFTs were produced, making them desirable collector’s items. But it seems that the owner of the BAYC NFT is actually Bieber’s business partner Gianpiero D’Alessandro, designer for Bieber’s fashion line Drew House who recently released the NFT collection Inbetweeners, which Bieber has promoted as well. According to Coindesk, shortly thereafter “the InBetweeners Twitter account began gloating about how the (maybe) Bieber-owned NFT was inflating the price of InBetweeners NFTs.
But probably the biggest awareness push for BAYC came from NBA superstar Steph Curry, who, as far as we can tell, has no vested interest. In August 2021, Curry bought a Bored Ape for USD 180,000 and uses it occasionally as his Twitter avatar (Curry has 15.5 million followers) and joined the BAYC Discord server for a quick chat. Both his celebrity and the price make headlines; the impact is also recorded by Google Trends, which registered a spike in searches for BAYC in the next week.

BAYC’s ROI and How Much a Bored Ape Costs Today
Bored Apes are likely to be amongst the NFTs that brought the most disproportionate returns to early owners. As mentioned above, they were minted at a price of 0.08 ETH each in April 2021.
At the time of this writing – January 2022, the floor price on OpenSea sits at 77.99 ETH, which is a return of almost 100,000%.
While many apes sold for six and even seven figures, the most expensive one seems to be Bored Ape #3749. It sold for 740 ETH, worth around $2.9 million at the time of the purchase. This is how it looks like:

There are other notable mentions here, including Bored Ape #2087, which sold for $2.3 million, Bored Ape $8585 – sold for $2.67 million, Bored Ape #7090 – sold for $2.27 million, and so forth.

HOW HAS BORED APE YACHT CLUB RESPONDED?
Without reference to the conversation that blew up on January 3, the team behind Yuga Labs took to social media the same day, obliquely debunking the claims of racism. In a Twitter thread, they begin with the origin of the company’s name, writing: “We’re nerds, and Yuga is the name of a villain in Zelda whose ability is that he can turn himself and others into 2D art. Made sense for an NFT company.”
As for the decision to feature apes, as opposed to another less inflammatory animal, they say that they drew from the crypto community’s long tradition of “affectionately” referring to themselves as apes. The logo? It was simply inspired by a ramshackle yacht club, and the skull is supposed to represent that fact that the apes are so bored that they’re “bored to death”.
The name Gargamel isn’t mentioned, but — as if pre-empting the trouble it would cause — the man behind it broke down its origin in a November 2021 Rolling Stone article, saying: “(Gargamel is) a name I ridiculously gave myself based off the fact that my fiancée had never seen The Smurfs when we were launching this.”

The $APE token?
Yuga Labs had a strong month in March 2022. They announced the introduction of a new currency, ApeCoin ($APE), just days after announcing the acquisition of CryptoPunks and Meebits. ApeCoin is a “currency for culture, gaming, and commerce intended to promote a decentralized community growing at the vanguard of web3,” according to its description.
The $APE will specifically be used to govern the future of the Bored Ape community.
The token was not produced solely by BAYC (though the founders are involved). ApeCoinDAO is the ApeCoin creator technically. What is the issue? The flaws that members of the NFT community condemn in traditional capitalism appear to be replicated in $APE: venture capitalists and centralization.
Those with more tokens usually have more power in a DAO’s governance. Because they invested in Yuga Labs, Andreessen Horowitz and Animoca Brands were two of the biggest ApeCoin beneficiaries. Yuga Labs and other launch partners earned a total of 14 percent, according to a representative for the company (140 million tokens). That’s the same amount as the BAYC community as a whole, which is made up of tens of thousands of people.
Whatever one’s feelings are on the subject, it does appear to be a bit of a setback in terms of decentralization, which is a core tenet of the NFT community.
Yuga Labs, on the other hand, made no mention of this in their statements. “The community has long desired ApeCoin, and we’re happy to see it come to life through community ownership,” Yuga Labs CEO Nicole Muniz said in a statement. “Yuga Labs will continue to create products and experiences that inspire the community with fresh ideas and enthusiasm.”
What Makes the BAYC a Unique and Revolutionary NFT Collection?
Besides the provable and verifiable uniqueness of each NFT, the Bored Ape Yacht Club, as a project, is also interesting because of a few other attributes.
Right off the bat, the project launched with a detailed roadmap from the start. The relatable attributes for the Bored Apes also managed to make them perfect for online avatars and grew to become the biggest PFP project.
The number of unique owners is also quite enough for a relatively strong NFT community. In addition, owners get the rights to use the Bored Apes commercially – something that’s critical for the future development of the project.
There’s already a very strong community centered around BAYC, and it grows each day. This is also because a considerable number of celebrities have jumped on board, which brings us to our next point.
NFTs (ERC-721) The Basics
Non-Fungible tokens are unique 1 of 1 tokens minted on a blockchain. They differ from Fungible tokens, which are a group of identical tokens . The word fungible is basically just a fancy word for interchangeable.
So, fungible tokens, like Eth or a US Dollars, are interchangeable in the sense that you don’t care which dollar bill you have. Most people have no problem trading an ETH for an ETH.
Non fungible tokens, like a Bored Ape or a deed to a house, may be part of a larger collection, but each individual token has its own unique properties.
You do mind which Bored Ape you have or which house you have, even if they are in the same housing complex.
There are 10,000 Bored Apes, meaning if you own one you are part of the Bored Ape Yacht Club Community, but each ape has it’s own characteristics, some of which are more desirable than others.
In general, NFTs and their use cases are still being figured out. Some artists mint a single piece of digital art, some people mint collections, some people give song rights or exclusive access. If you’re looking to browse NFTs, the most popular secondary marketplace is OpenSea.

Ether (the currency for the Ethereum blockchain) peaked in May, nearly reaching $4,000 before dipping below $2,000 in late June. Anecdotally speaking, when the price of Ether rises, NFT sales seem to slow down. It’s harder and more expensive for new people to obtain Ether and people likely seek liquidity to invest in the rising asset.

The average sale for a Bored Ape increased 360% from May to June, from 0.6985 ETH (~$2,794) to 3.21 ETH (~$6,420).
It’s worth noting that there were 3,269 unique buyers of Bored Apes in May and 2,347 in June, which was significant distribution and nearly 10% of active wallets on Opensea.

Everything About BAYC Event: ApeFest
The first edition of Ape Fest, BAYC’s marquee IRL event, took place in New York City towards the end of 2021. The multi-day event included an immersive gallery event, merch pop-up, and warehouse party headlined by Beck, The Strokes, and BAYC member Lil Baby. Fittingly, the highlight of the first Ape Fest was an actual yacht party for holders.
