Quartz Formation

If the quartz approaches pure silicon dioxide, it is clear and colorless, with air bubbles and miscellaneous impurities accounting for the milky hue often seen in quartz. Types of inclusions in quartz — other metal ions such as iron or aluminum — can become part of the internal arrangement, giving the potential for color.

When atoms combine to form molecules, they usually do so by sharing electrons, bonding them together. If everything balances electrically, the atom is stable and neutral. But when aluminum is present in quartz, it replaces some of the silicon atoms, and they differ in their electron balance. Silicon shares four of its electrons with two oxygen atoms in rock crystal. Aluminum, taking the place of silicon, has only three electrons it can share with two oxygen atoms. This electron difference makes the quartz susceptible to outside energies. Introduce a bit of radioactivity, and the quartz containing aluminum becomes a smoky color — one of the most popular varieties of quartz. We can make smoky quartz by bombarding clear quartz with radiation, something often done with Arkansas quartz.

Iron is another metallic element that can get into the atomic structure of quartz and affect the color. Iron is unusual because it can have four electrons to share, like silicon, or it can have only two or three, like aluminum. If it shares three electrons, the quartz can take on a yellow color. We call that citrine. If the iron has four electrons to share due to an unusual case of radiation, it will take on an amethyst (purple) color. We can change amethyst to citrine by heat-treating the quartz to disturb the electron arrangement.

The final color we see in crystallized quartz — the least common of the group — is rose. Various research has shown that the reason for the lovely, limpid pink color may have to do with the presence of titanium. Additionally, the Gemological Institute of America reports, “Research has shown that rose quartz owes its delicate pink color to microscopic inclusions of aligned silicate mineral fibers.” Again, the interaction of electrons produces the color emissions we see.

As you know, there are other colors of crystallized quartzes: green and blue, among others. These colors are largely due to inclusions, though citrine and amethyst quartz, as I mentioned, can be changed to green by heat-treating the stone.

Swatch – Highest Swiss Quality at the lowest Price

At the beginning of the 1980s, Swiss banks commissioned management consultant Nicolas George Hayek to analyze the seemingly hopeless situation. Hayek, who once described himself as an impatient dreamer, found two ways out of the crisis. His idea was to unite the brands of the two largest watch groups (ASUAG and SSIH) under one strong umbrella brand and to develop a new watch collection offering Swiss quality at a low price. The Swatch Group was born through a banking agreement, with Nicolas G. Hayek at the helm.

Already after a short period of R&D, Hayek had quartz and automatic movements built in plastic cases and launched huge numbers of Swatch watches on the international markets. He pursued a provocative marketing strategy that was extremely unusual for the Swiss watchmaking industry. Swatch watches were flat, light, colorful and shrill. Hayek himself decided which designs would go into production. In the lower price segment, Swatch watches were in direct competition with watches from Japan. Swatch suddenly became a trendy accessory of pop culture worldwide. Swiss made was en vogue again. A stroke of genius, literally in the last second.

Record Keepers: Have Clearly Defined Triangles

Record Keeper crystals have clearly defined triangles on one or more of the faces of the piece of crystal.

This was a completely clear quartz crystal when I obtained it quite a few years ago, and it was one of the first crystals I bought.

The triangles both popped up and sunk simultaneously, and this stone has both raised triangles and sunken triangles within the one stone.

An interesting fact about record keepers is that the triangle may suddenly ‘pop’ or simply appear on a crystal that did not previously have any on it.

Clear Quartz Record Keeper

There are two types of Record Keeper quartz configurations, the raised record keeper and the sunken record keeper, although the first is more common than the second.

How Does a Quartz Watch Work?

Quartz movement utilizes the power of a battery to keep the watch running. The battery sends a small electrical current through a quartz crystal (hence the name). This current electrifies the crystal to create vibrations (32,768 times per second), using the crystal as an oscillator. The electric circuit counts the vibrations, and every time it has vibrated 32,768 times, it sends a small pulse to move the second hand, and eventually the other watch hands.

This periodic vibration from the battery and quartz crystal is also the reason why the quartz movements watch hands aren’t moving in a sweeping motion but moves in small increments instead.

May Be Called More Than One Name

Over the years different authors have given the quartz configurations distinct names, and some may even be called more than one name.

Various writers have given these formations their own specific names, when they discuss their metaphysical attributes and healing properties.

I have done quite a lot of research and have where possible detailed the most well known names that are used by writers.

I have listed these in the in-depth sections about each of the quartz formations, further down the page.

Temple Heart Dow

Temple Heart Dow quartz are a quite rare variety of channeling crystal, that are also known as Trans-Channeling Crystals.

They combine the attributes of the Transmitter crystal and the Channeling crystal, being both the same as both of these, yet much more.

Smoky Quartz In Temple Heart Dow Formation also called Trans-Channeller

This configuration is one of the more complex quartz formations, as they need to have a 3-7-3-7-3-7 face configuration to be a Dow.

In the Temple Heart Dow Crystal, the center face is commonly a seven sided face.

To be called a Dow, they need to have a perfect triangle on each side of this center seven sided face, like the lovely big Smokey Quartz Trans-Channeling Crystal shown above.

Is The Crisis Really Over?

Considering that quartz watches represent more than 95% of timepieces produced today, it is safe to say that the quartz revolution had a durable effect on the watches industry.

Some say another crisis is about to happen with smartwatches now taking the world by storm and some believe that mechanical watches will again be in style. We’ll cover this in another article. For now, let’s enjoy the mechanical beauties that we own.

Quartz Configurations: Quartz Clusters

Quartz Clusters are some of the most widely sold quartz configurations.

They can be large or small, and if they are large they can embody a combination of different crystal configurations.

Generally speaking a cluster is a group of crystals growing together and that are joined because they have grown together.

There are many excellent reasons why you might wish to have a quartz crystal cluster in your environment.

Firstly as quartz resonates very strongly, each of the points in a cluster will strongly resonate, sending a healing vibration into the environment where they are located.

Clusters are excellent quartz configurations to boost your personal energy.

The larger the number of points in the cluster the stronger will be the energy they will send out to you and everyone in the area.

They are excellent crystals to use if you are a healer or a teacher, to have in the room to enhance the energy and bring peace and harmony to everyone present.

Is Quartz is Better Than Granite?

Their primary ingredient is ground quartz (about 94 percent), combined with polyester resins to bind it and pigments to give it color. For some designs, small amounts of recycled glass or metallic flecks are added to the mix. The resins also help make these counters stain and scratch resistant—and nonporous, so they never need to be sealed. Compare that with granite, the reigning king of high-end countertops, which typically requires a new protective top coat at least once a year.

Chapter Five – Applications of Quartz Glass

The following are the common applications of quartz glass:

Optical Devices

A majority of the applications of quartz glass utilize its
optical properties due to its wide transparency range and
superior light transmittance, ranging from the ultraviolet to
infrared regions. Quartz glass is not easily damaged by
ultra-violet and high energy radiation. Light can pass through a
quartz glass in a functionalized optical path with minimal
distortions. Examples of products with optical applications are:
prisms, lenses, beam splitters, polarizers, mirrors and windows.

Lighting Devices

High purity quartz glass is used in various lamps and lighting
systems, such as mercury lamps, halogen lamps, xenon lamps,
ultra-violet lamps and arc and filament lamps which provide
light source at high temperatures. These lamps are utilized in
several industries, among which are sterilization and cleaning
apparatuses in the food and medical industries and exposure
devices in the semiconductor industry.

Chemical Equipment and Apparatuses

Quartz glass material is a good but expensive alternative, since
it is chemically inert, to other glass types which cannot
withstand high temperature application for a specific use.
Common applications are glasswares, plates and tubes.

Refractory Materials

Fused silica has highly efficient wave transmission in the
ultraviolet spectrum and is commonly used to make ultraviolet
windows, lenses, and optics.

How to cleanse Cherry Quartz

Cherry quartz can be cleansed and purified in a few different ways. White sage represents a good and natural way to get the job done in no time. But at the same time, if you are a big fan of quartz, a quartz cluster or quartz chips are just as efficient. Such cleansing methods are highly indicated for those who own multiple quartz crystals because they ensure a great purification in bulk.

You can also go for a more spiritual approach. Many crystals are cleansed with a crystal tuner. Such a tool would be great if you own more crystals and you do not want the hassle of different purification methods.

Other than that, the classic moonlight will never fail on you. Leave the cherry quartz under the moonlight for a night and it will recharge with positive energies.

The Automatic Movement

Also a mechanical watch, this movement is worthy of your attention.

The difference between an automatic and a mechanical movement is that the automatic movement continues to tick without having to wind it each day.

So long as you wear it on your wrist, the motion of your arm keeps the watch wound.

It does this by using an off-center weighted rotor which spins as you move throughout the day. As it turns, it activates a ratchet system which keeps the watch wound.

That half circle disc with the SEIKO logo (the rotor) spins as you turn and swing your arm throughout the day, winding up the mechanical movement.

If we look at these movements as a whole, they aren’t any more accurate than the manually wound mechanical movements you have to wind each day.

Today, most automatic watches also contain a power reserve which gives you a window to remove the watch from your wrist without having to keep it in motion.

A watch with a 72-hour power reserve will give you that chance to wear another watch in between, or just allow you to pop it on your nightstand for a good night sleep.

This Orient automatic watch has a power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock. It currently shows 0 hours, meaning the watch is totally unwound (not ticking at all). Fully wound, this watch has a 40 hour power reserve.

Unlike mechanical watches, timepieces powered by automatic movements vary significantly. At the top range, a wristwatch with an in-house, handmade movement can cost a small fortune.

For every feature added to the watch, the complexity of crafting its movement increases, which in turn drives up the price. Known as complications, these features can be as simple as a date window on your watch. However, others are far more advanced.

A perfect example of this is a grand complication pocket watch called the Reference 57260. It’s produced by a luxury Swiss watchmaker named Vacheron Constantin and features 57 different complications, or features, in addition to just telling the time.

Since the watch is handcrafted by skilled artisans, it takes eight years to assemble and uses 2,826 moving parts and 31 hands on the dial. It’s the Mona Lisa of timepieces.

Clear Quartz is a master healer crystal, and may be used for any condition. It is thought to stimulate the immune and circulatory systems, enhancing energy flow and bringing the body into balance. Transmitter Crystals and Channeling crystals are similar quartz formations, as they have a similar structure in some ways to each other.

Instead of having a seven sided face at the front, this configuration has a triangle as its main face.

In Transmitter Crystals, the center face is a perfect triangle, and located at each side of this center triangle is a seven sided face.

So the quartz configurations that make up these crystals are a 7-3-7 face configuration.

Transmitter crystals have a strong energy that aids you to make a
connection with the higher realms, and also aids the development of

Later models with stainless steel case

Produced since the end of 1970, and introduced on the market in 1971, the two stainless steel models, also identified as 35SQ and 35SQC (SQ stood for Seiko Quartz and C for Calendar), present some important differences that go beyond design and materials.

The movement, although apparently the same caliber 35A as the previous gold cased models, hides a CMOS integrated circuit, with a frequency doubled to 16,384 Hz. This improved the accuracy of the watch to ± 0.1 seconds per day and ± 3 seconds per month.

These two new models were found on the opening pages of the 1972 Seiko Catalog. On the back of the case we find the reference 35-9010 on the model without date and 3502-9010 on the one with a date window.

Aggregate Setting & Body Color

A countertop’s veins, patterns and textures should permeate through the slab’s body. Styles like undermount sink cuts or waterfall countertop edges will look tacky if the chosen quartz slabs only feature surface-deep designs. If the color fades or disappears halfway through the edge, don’t buy it.

Examining the aggregate setting is also crucial. Crushed material that forms patterns in quartz is referred to as aggregate. Fine or chunky aggregate can be used as long as it is equally distributed throughout the slab.

Pits, pockets, weight, and density imbalances increase fragility. A visual examination will rapidly indicate whether a quartz slab is uniform in color, thickness, and crystalline texture. It goes without saying that a homeowner should never order from a suspicious catalog and should always inspect the slab in person before making a purchase.
