Perry is now dedicated to a life of sobriety, but he’s undergone a major transformation in recent years.
He was spotted for the first time in six months last April, with grey hair and stubble, looking almost unrecognisable.
Perry hinted he was finding lockdown difficult that same month, posting to his fans on Instagram: «Why is today especially hard???» as hundreds of followers replied with messages of support.

Julia Roberts is reflecting on the «heartbreaking» loss of Matthew Perry.The 56-year-old actress recalled her brief stint on Friends in a new interview with ET’s Kevin Frazier, offering her heartfelt reaction to Perry’s untimely death.
«All good thoughts and feelings,» Roberts said of her experience on the beloved sitcom, when she guest starred as a childhood classmate of Perry’s Chandler Bing in the 1996 episode, «The One After the Super Bowl.» Perry later wrote in his 2022 memoir that, off camera, he and Roberts had engaged in a «three-month-long courtship» at the time.
«They were all so welcoming to me as just a kind of a one-off character and it was a really fun time,» she continued.
«The sudden passing of anybody so young is heartbreaking,» Roberts said of her ex. «I think that, you know, it just helps all of us just appreciate what we have and to keep going in a positive way as best we can.»
Friends references are a recurring theme in Roberts’ new film, Leave the World Behind. The apocalyptic thriller also stars Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and Myha’la. It is in theaters now and will be streaming on Netflix beginning Dec. 8.
«It’s beautiful he could sort of be honored in that way,» Ali told ET of the way Friends is subtly included in the film. «Or the show sort of be honored, coincidentally, at this time. So it’s kinda nice that it has a little space in there.»
Perry died on Oct. 28. He was 54.
Liaison
In his book, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry gave details about his romance with Roberts in the ’90s. It began, he wrote, when the latter was considering her guest role on Friends.
«I sent her three dozen red roses and the card read: ‘The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I finally have an excuse to send you flowers,'» he recalled in the book, going on to detail the timeline of their relationship.
«Three or four times a day I would sit by my fax machine and watch the piece of paper slowly revealing her next missive,» he wrote. «I was so excited that some nights I would find myself out at some party sharing a flirtatious exchange with an attractive woman and cut the conversation short so I could race home and see if a new fax had arrived.»
He praised Roberts for her faxes and her intellect, writing, «It was like she was placed on this planet to make the world smile, and now, in particular, me. I was grinning like some 15-year-old on his first date.»
He noted that by the time they filmed her episode, they were already a couple. Perry also recalled a February 1996 appearance from Roberts on The Late Show With David Letterman where she jokingly confirmed their romance.
«Two months later, I was single,» Perry added. «Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable.»
He continued that the pressures of dating such a famous star made him decide to break up with her.
«Instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts,» he wrote. «She might have considered herself slumming it with a TV guy, and TV guy was now breaking up with her. I can’t begin to describe the look of confusion on her face.»

In the weeks following his passing, Perry’s family launched The Matthew Perry Foundation in honor of his enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction.
«It is important to us as a family to honor Matthew’s legacy,» his family said in a statement to ET earlier this month. «The potential that the Matthew Perry Foundation has to help those suffering with this disease is something we are proud to bring to the world.»

‘Forgetting 3 years of Friends’ amid addiction
Perry has been very open about his long-time battle with addiction.
He famously checked himself into rehab twice during his time on Friends, firstly in 1997 to treat his addiction to prescription pills, after getting hooked following a jet-ski accident.
He then returned in 2001 to deal with Vicodin, methadone, amphetamines, and alcohol addictions.

Then in 2011, he issued a statement to TMZ saying he would be spending some time out of the spotlight to «proactively» focus on his sobriety.
«I’m making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery. Please enjoy making fun of me on the world wide web,» he said.
His struggles led to the star becoming a spokesperson for drugs charities – and he even lobbied in Congress in 2011 to gain support for sufferers.

«Eventually things got so bad that I couldn’t hide it, and then everybody knew.”
In 2016 he admitted he had forgotten «three years» of Friends due to his addiction, in an interview with BBC Radio 2’s Chris Evans.
When asked to name his least favourite episode of Friends, he said: “I think the answer is I don’t remember three years of it, so none of those. I was a little out of it at the time. Somewhere between seasons three and six.”

Sudden weight loss & health scares
In between his two stints in rehab, Perry sparked major concerns among fans when his weight is said to have plummeted to around 10 stone.
It turned out he’d spent two weeks in hospital with acute pancreatitis, which can reportedly be caused by excessive drinking.

«In my case, it was hard living and drinking hard and eating poorly,» he told Us Weekly, according to E! News. «You play, you pay… But there were no pills involved. I learned my lesson at Hazelden.»
Shortly after leaving hospital, he then crashed his Porsche into an unoccupied house. No drugs or alcohol were found in his system, but it only raised concerns about the troubled star at the time.
His Friends co-star Matt LeBlanc told People: “I tried to talk to him. There wasn’t a response. It’s such a personal struggle; they need to bottom out on their own.»
The actor is also known to have battled health problems since, and in 2018 he underwent emergency surgery on a ruptured bowel.

Gastrointestinal perforation, more commonly known as ruptured bowel, occurs when a hole forms all the way through the stomach, large bowel, or small intestine.
Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and tenderness and complications can lead to sepsis which is a life-threatening bacterial infection.

According to TMZ, which was the first to report the news, the actor was found at his Los Angeles-area home Saturday after spending the morning playing pickleball for a few hours.
His assistant reportedly stepped out to run a couple of errands for Perry, yet when he returned, he found the actor unresponsive and called 911.
The Los Angeles Police Department later confirmed to Page Six that they responded to a call regarding a man “in his 50s” at “4:10 pm this afternoon.” However, they did not reveal the man’s identity.

While they could not confirm if the body was found in a tub, pool, or hot tub, the actor shared an eerie photo of himself lounging in his infinity pool less than one week before his passing.
“Oh, so warm water swirling around makes you feel good? I’m Mattman,” he captioned the post.
A few days prior, Perry was also seen grabbing dinner with a close friend in Los Angeles.
The “Fools Rush In” star, who rose to fame in the ’90s, seemed to be in great spirits during his last known outing as he chowed down at a popular burger joint.
What did Matthew Perry say about Valerie Bertinelli?
Per a report from PageSix, Matthew recounts in his upcoming memoir how he once had a steamy makeout session with Valerie…while her husband, Eddie Van Halen, was passed out drunk right next to them!
According to the report, Matthew writes in his book that, «I fell madly in love with Valerie Bertinelli, who clearly had a troubled marriage.» (Valerie and Eddie got divorced in 2007, just FYI).
Matthew was unflinchingly honest about his huge crush on Valerie at the time, writing, «My crush was crushing; not only was she way out of my league, but she was also married to one of the biggest rock stars on the planet.»
